Since the inaugural running at Hollywood Park 27 years ago, the Breeders’ Cup has firmly established itself as the season-ending championship of Thoroughbred racing. Now reknown for showcasing the highest level of international Thoroughbred racing competition, the 28th running of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships returns to Churchill Downs for a record eighth time.
The 2011 Breeders’ Cup will be hosted at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, home of the Kentucky Derby. Of all the tracks honored to host the Breeders’ Cup Championships, Churchill Downs is considered to be one of the best. In addition to hosting the Breeders' Cup the last two years, Churchill Downs annually hosts the Kentucky Derby on the 2nd Saturday of May. Over the years, Churchill Downs has undergone a series of renovations, making it a world-class venue which is very accustomed to dealing with huge crowds. No matter the attendance for the Breeders’ Cup 2011, you can expect the facility to easily manage the lines for wagering, food and drinks.
Majestic Thoroughbreds, rolling hills of bluegrass, the mighty Ohio River, outrageous antique shops, quaint art and craft galleries, historic homes and a fabulous array of family attractions are just a few of the sights that make Louisville a one-of-a-kind destination. With over 2,500 restaurants, visitors from around the world are astounded by the variety and quality of fine dining in the area by chefs who have taken regional cuisine to a nationally recognized level.
In addition to Louisville's local attractions such as the Derby Museum, Muhammad Ali Center, Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory, the city is one of only nine in the United States with a professional full-time orchestra, opera, ballet, children's theatre, dinner theatre and Broadway series.
Allow enough time to stroll down West Main Street with its historic bricked sidewalks, mid-19th century architecture and wrought-iron décor. Located a block south of the Ohio River, explore Louisville's roots as a river port city while history reveals itself in the facades of many of the street's unique attractions.
Breeders Cup Stakes Races
The Breeders' Cup consists of 14 Championship races over two days. With more than $26 million in purses, the 2011 Breeders' Cup will be the richest two days in sports. The Breeders' Cup Classic is held on the 2nd day and is considered to be the premier thoroughbred horse race of the year in the United States. The winner many times has gone on to win U.S. Horse of the Year honors. Traditionally, the winners of the other Breeders Cup races determine almost all of the annual Eclipse Award champions.
